What is faith according to the Bible?

In Hebrews 11:1, the apostle teaches us that “ faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen .” Faith can therefore be defined as a principle of power and action. To have faith is to have hope . When we hope to obtain something, our actions are directed by this hope. Even if we have not yet obtained it, we already feel all the happiness that we will derive from it. All our actions and thoughts are directed in this direction.

In Matthew 9:27-30, we find a story that perfectly illustrates what faith is. When Jesus asked the two blind men, “ Do you believe that I am able to do this? ” They answered, “ Yes, Lord .” “ Then he touched their eyes, saying, ‘According to your faith, be it unto you.’ And their eyes were opened .”

In the Old Testament, we also find the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “ We have no need to answer you about this. Behold, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods, nor worship the golden image which you have set up ” (Daniel 3:17-18).

    Why seek faith?

Faith is what distinguishes God's followers from others. The Lord cannot appreciate us if we do not have faith. In Hebrews 11:6 it even says that "he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him."

God blesses those who have faith in Him and those who obey Him. This is the case, for example, of the sinful woman who was able to benefit from Christ's comforting words : "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace!" (Luke 7:5).

Faith helps us overcome the challenges of life because we know that God is waiting for us to sit with him for eternity. “You have not seen him and you love him, but you do not see him now, and you believe in him. You rejoice with joy that is indescribable and full of glory , because you have received the salvation of your souls as the end of your faith” (1 Peter 1:8-9).

    How to have faith?

Faith comes to those who seek it. In Philippians 4:6-7, Paul tells us, “ Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God . And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus .”

Our faith can be strengthened by listening to or reading passages from the Bible . “ Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God ” (Romans 10:17). Faith draws us closer to God. We can nourish it by praying and reading God’s Word daily.

Faith in God, how does it take shape?

Faith in God can manifest itself in different ways. Several Bible verses address how it takes shape.

John 16:33 says, “ These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer ; I have overcome the world .” 1 Peter 1:7 says, “ That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, even though tried with fire, may be unto you a praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ .” Matthew 11:28-29 says, “ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me: for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye will find rest unto your souls.

Now you know the verses that speak about faith in the Bible . The passages we have seen have shown us what faith is. You know what it represents and why it is so dear to Christian believers.
