Raphael the Archangel, who is he?

    Raphael the Archangel

In Christianity, Raphael refers to an archangel. The angel Raphael is one of the three most important archangels in the Catholic and Orthodox Church. The other two archangels are Michael and Gabriel. He is celebrated on October 24.

The name comes from the Hebrew: Rafa-El. This name means "God heals" or "Heal Him" or "God's medicine". Currently, the Hebrew word for doctor is Rofe, related to the same root as Rafa-El. His name refers not only to the health of the body, but also to the health of the soul.

Raphael is therefore considered the God's healer himself. His name and the biblical stories in which he is mentioned, have given him this role of healer. He represents the aspect of God that helps human beings maintain emotional balance and bodily health.

    Saint Raphael in the Bible

According to the book of Tobit 7:15, Raphael was sent by Yahweh to accompany Tobias, the son of Tobit, on a long and dangerous journey. The purpose of this journey is to find a pious wife for the young man. This woman will be Sarah, who until then, has seen her seven fiancées die, all killed by a demon who is in love with her. This demon is called Asmodeus.

At first, Raphael introduces himself as "Azarias, son of the great Ananias." But at the end of the journey, he heals Tobit's blindness and manifests himself as "the angel Raphael , one of the seven in the presence of the Lord." During the journey, he orders Tobias to catch a fish, from which he would extract the entrails.

He will use the fish to chase away the demon Asmodeus who is in love with Sara. Later, he will cure his father's blindness. For this reason, Rafael is considered the protector of the couple or the court . However, he is not the one who promotes courtship like Cupid.

    Saint Raphael, the patron saint

Saint Raphael is the patron saint of the sick , because he is the angel who brings the healing energy of God to human beings. This reminds the human being that the body is an important instrument for the mind. Therefore, it must be cared for with much love and attention.

He is also the patron saint of the blind, chance encounters, nurses, doctors, and travelers. Saint Raphael the Archangel , has great compassion for all beings, especially those who have physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual ailment. His intercession can be sought to heal illnesses and ailments of all kinds.

The Story of Archangel Saint Raphael

The story of Saint Raphael is mentioned in the Book of Tobit , in the Old Testament. It is said in this book, that the holy patriarch Tobias of the Mosaic law was distinguished by his virtue and fear of God. He was a practitioner of all works of mercy and charity. However, the Lord allowed him to suffer tribulations and sorrows: he was a slave of Shalmanasar in Nineveh. He also lost his property and was even sentenced to death by King Sennacherib, freeing himself from her by fleeing. Returning home, he devoted himself again to works of mercy.

Tired one day from the work of burying the dead, Israelites like himself and the victims of the king's anger, he wanted to rest next to a wall. While he was sleeping, the filth of a swallow's nest fell into his eyes and he became blind. He endured this trial from the Lord with admirable patience and resignation. Enduring the grievances, the offenses of his wife and his friends, who mocked him.

All this caused him deep sorrow, for which he fervently implored the Lord for help and comfort. While Tobias was praying, Sarah, the daughter of Raguel, also prayed to God to deliver her from the misfortune that afflicted her, with the death of her various husbands. The Lord heard the prayers of Tobias and Sarah. He sent his archangel Raphael to relieve them.

    Tobias's Journey

Old Tobias, believing that he was in the evening of his life, called his son to bless him and give him his last advice. To do this, he sent him to collect from Gabelo, one of his relatives, residing in Rages, a debt of ten talents. Tobias prepared for his journey.

Young Tobias obeyed, leaving the house, met a handsome young man who offered himself for such a journey. They prepared everything that was practical, then both set off on the road. After the first day of travel, they settled down to rest on the banks of the Tigris. Circumstance of which Tobias took advantage to wash his feet.

Suddenly, a monstrous fish comes out of the river and attacks him. At the voices of the young man, the archangel Raphael comes and orders him, squeezing the fish, to withdraw from the water. He tells him to open its entrails and remove its heart, gall and liver. They will use them in due time and prepare the rest for their food.

    Tobias in Raguel's house

On their way to Rages, Tobias and Raphael should pass by Raguel's house . This is how Tobias fell in love with young Sarah. The archangel told Tobias to ask for Sarah's hand, for he would not meet the same fate as the other husbands she had had. Tobias would not die like Sarah's previous husbands, since his heart was pure and not a captive of lust. Raguel accepted Tobias with great joy and gave him his only daughter.

Tobias, following the instructions Raphael had given him, took out a piece of the fish's heart and placed it on hot coals in his room. Meanwhile, the guilty demon, bound by the archangel was led into a desert in Upper Egypt. In order that Sarah's peace should no longer be disturbed, Tobias, following the instructions of Raphael spends the night praying to defeat the enemy.

Ana, Raguel's wife , Fearing that it would happen like the previous times, he sent one of his waitresses to Sara's room. She returned with the happy news, the couple slept peacefully. The next day Raguel organized a great wedding banquet during which he gave Tobias half of his property. As a dowry for his daughter, he passed on to her the domination of the other half after his death. Gabelo went to Raguel's house to pay the debt to Tobias and take part in the general rejoicing.

    Tobias's return home

Finally, Tobias and his wife Sara, advised by Raphael, returned to his home with a large entourage of servants. Later, Raphael exhorts Tobias to go ahead with him, anticipating his return, saying to him: "Take some of the gall of the fish with you, for it will soon be needed." They left Sarah and the waiters behind.

Giving thanks to God and offering sacrifices of worship to the Lord, young Tobias takes some of the gall of the fish, following the advice of his companion, anoints his father on the eyes. Tobit has regained his sight, so healthy and perfect, as if he had never been blind.

The old man and all his relatives again blessed the Lord with great joy, which reached the limit. Seven days later, Sarah arrived with her servants and her wealth. There were great feasts and treats. Knowing that all these goods came from the mediation and kindness of the guide whose personality they did not know, old Tobias said to his son: “How can we be grateful, my son, for the blessings that this young man who was your guide has bestowed upon us?”

    Raphael's Revelation to Tobit

"Father, I do not know," replied the son, "what reward is worthy of him. He has carried me safely, recover Gabelo's debt. He has made Sarah my wife, driving out the demon that tormented her and filling her parents' house with joy. He has freed me from the fish and healed you so that you may see the light of heaven again. Pray to him, my father, that he may deign to receive, even if only half of all that we have brought."

The holy man called Raphael, and they earnestly begged him to deign to accept half of the goods received. Then Saint Raphael, revealing his secret to them, spoke to them thus: "Bless the God of heaven and give him thanks first, because he has used his mercy with you. I am Archangel Raphael, one of the seven who are before the Lord."

Hearing this, the two Tobiases were shocked. Full of fear, they fell to the ground. Saint Raphael then said to them gently: “Do not be afraid, for when I was with you, I was by the will of God. Bless him and sing his praises. It is time for me to return to him who sent me. You, always bless the Lord and tell of his wonders.” He disappeared after saying these words to them and they never saw him again.
