2 prayers for your marriage
Here are two prayers for a Catholic marriage , centered on the love and commitment of the couple:
1. Prayer for unity and love in marriage:
"Lord, we thank You for this blessed day when we unite our lives before You. We ask You to grant us the grace of true love, the kind that forgives, sustains and grows day by day. Help us to build our home on the solid foundations of faith, hope and charity. May we always turn to You in times of joy and trials, and may Your love guide us in every decision and action. May our marriage be a reflection of Your infinite love for the Church, and may it bring peace and happiness to all those around us. Amen."
2. Prayer for the blessing of the couple:
"Lord Jesus, You who blessed the wedding at Cana by transforming water into wine, come and bless our union on this day. We entrust to You our future, our joys and our sorrows. Teach us to love one another with a pure, patient and selfless love, a love that always seeks to serve the other before itself. May our marriage be a testimony of Your presence among us, and may it be a source of light and love for our families and friends. Lead us on the path of holiness, and help us to grow together in faith and fidelity, now and forever. Amen."
These prayers can be recited during the ceremony, during the blessing of the rings or at other significant moments of the marriage .
Love and marriage
Love is a concept that can be understood in many ways. Most of us would agree that it is a pleasant feeling. In fact, it has been shown that the body responds to love .
When we talk about love, we usually think of two people who love each other (a couple). If this relationship lasts, these two individuals will eventually get married. Normally, love between a man and a woman always ends in marriage. Marriage marks the union between these two people. From then on, they will become one.
This is how most of us view love and marriage . But the Bible has a less conventional way of looking at these two concepts.
Bible Verses About Love
There are many verses in the Bible that directly refer to love .
In John 3:16 it says that “ God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. ”
Here we see very clearly the weight of the word "love". God loved us so much that he gave us his Son (and his only Son, at that). Love can therefore push us to let go of what we are attached to. Even if this passage does not speak at all of sacrifice , we can think that the fact of loving could push us to do so. Moreover, in John 15:13, Jesus tells us "It is not good enough to lay down one's life for one's friends ". God gave us Jesus, and Jesus gave us his life. This is undoubtedly one of the greatest proofs of love that has ever existed.
This shows us how much love God has for us. The Bible also talks about the love we are to give Him in return. In Mark 12:29-33, we can find the following passage: “ Jesus answered and said, The first is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: and, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. ”
Love is therefore a close bond that unites God and men. But let us not forget that we must also love one another, because this is one of the wills of the Creator. “ Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 He who does not love does not know God, because God is love .” (1 John 4:7-9). Loving one another shows that God is at work in our lives.
Love is a subject on which one can dwell at length. The few passages we have quoted clearly show the position of the Bible on the concept.
What does the Bible say about marriage?
Marriage is a religious sacrament that unites a man and a woman. Obviously, a marriage can only succeed if there is love .
In Genesis 2:18-24, we can find the story of the creation of woman. The following passage is the one that interests us the most: " Then the Lord God caused a mysterious sleep to fall upon him, and the man slept. The Lord God took flesh from his side, and closed it up. And what he had taken from the man, he made a woman, and brought her to the man. Then the man said to me, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh! She shall be called Woman.' For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. "
This passage is taken up by many couples for the sacrament of their marriage . Indeed, this verse speaks of union and of leaving one's family to join one's wife. Marriage is a step that leads to the formation of a new independent family unit. It is God's love that allows this new family to remain united. God's presence is manifested by the love that the members feel for each other.
Now we know how the Bible stands on love and marriage . From the verses we have seen, God must always be in the forefront when it comes to love and marriage.
