    The Death of Jesus

    The Christian mission.

The crucifixion of Jesus is recorded in the books of the New Testament, known as the Gospels written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. This biblical story is the central summary of the saving gospel of Jesus . Jesus had prophesied his death in Matthew from this point on. Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer in the name of God, that he must go through things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and teachers of the law. And that he must give his life and be resurrected on the third day after his death. Jesus understood then that his life would be required as a sacrifice for the sins of man .

Jesus the King of the Jews: preacher of the good word.

Jesus traveled and preached the good word of God as he walked with his faithful apostles to Jerusalem. He angered the Roman leaders who feared that he would stir up trouble among the people and plan a revolution. Many Jews came to believe in Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God . As Jesus’ followers grew, the Roman leaders became increasingly concerned. Jesus was also feared by the Jewish leaders because of his challenges to authority and teachings. Jesus called out hypocrisy where he saw it and urged his community to demand a new prophetic vision. Those who opposed him saw him as a dangerous social climber who wanted to form a cult around himself. Meanwhile, Jesus continued to preach the good word of God to all the people. 👨‍👧‍👧

The last meal before the crucifixion.

During the Jewish Passover festival in Jerusalem, Jesus warned his disciples of his impending death and gathered them for a supper that would be their last meal . He was then betrayed and denounced to the Roman authorities by Judas, one of his disciples, and captured. Jesus was declared by the Jewish high priest to be a blasphemer who claimed to be the Messiah. Taken before the Roman authorities, Jesus was accused of sedition and was sent to be executed by the Roman practice of crucifixion , nailed to a cross . Jesus was well aware of these accusations leveled against him, by the political and religious authorities. He had predicted that he would be attacked and persecuted.

    Pontius Pilate washes his hands.

The Roman governor ''Pontius Pilate'' was reluctant when it came to punishing Jesus. Pilate could find no fault in the Lord, but he wanted to give the people what they wanted, and that was the death of Jesus . Pilate washed his hands in front of the crowd to symbolize that he did not take responsibility for Jesus' bloodshed. He then handed Jesus over to be beaten and whipped. Jesus had a crown of thorns on his head and was made to carry his cross up the hill where he was to be crucified. The place of Jesus' crucifixion is known as Calvary, which is translated as "place of the skull." 🩸

The soul of Jesus in heaven.

The crowds, accompanied by the Virgin Mary, had gathered to weep and watch the death of Jesus. Jesus was nailed to the cross between two criminals at his side. The two thieves who were near the Lord began to argue. One asked Jesus why his God did not save him and the other rebelled against this thieve out of pity for Christ. Jesus answered him: "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43) . Jesus then looked up to heaven and asked God to forgive men because they do not know what they are doing! As he took his last breath, Jesus said: " Father, into your hands I commend my spirit " (Luke 23:46) .

Extraordinary events marked the death of Jesus . The sky was completely dark for three hours as Jesus hung on the cross. At the moment of his last breath, the earth shook , the curtain of the temple was split from top to bottom, the tombs of the saints were opened, and their bodies were raised from the dead.

The decision of the Son of God.

Jesus and the Father are one and this knowledge was with Jesus throughout His life on earth (John 17:11). However, during the three hours of darkness as Christ hung on the cross , God willingly placed the sin of the world upon Jesus. He then turned His face away from His Son (Mark 15:34). It was this separation that paid the price for our sins by giving up His Spirit and giving His life.

As Jesus taught, the reason my Father loves me is because I lay down my life only to take it again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down willingly. I have the authority to lay it down and the authority to take it again. This commandment I received from my Father (John 10:17-18). That is why Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6). This became a complete reality with Jesus’ death , resurrection, and ascension to the Father. To prepare a place for all who trust in His sacrifice for sin . For all who trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior were then blessed and forgiven. For Jesus paid the full price by crucifying Himself and offered the grace of God to anyone who would believe in Him!

    God's forgiveness.

The death of Jesus Christ was significant because His sacrifice not only covered sin, it atoned for it! The purpose of our Lord's death was to end the suffering of the world's sins by forgiving them. " By this will we have been sanctified once for all through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ " (Hebrews 10:10) . It was after Jesus cried out "It is finished" and died physically that the price for our sin was paid. His soul being taken from his body was a very significant moment because of the resurrection that followed three days later.

But it was not Jesus’ physical death that paid the ransom for man’s sin. If that were all that was needed, one man’s death would have sufficed. Jesus’ death was a death unlike any other. It redeemed mankind from sin by satisfying God’s justice and allowed man to have a personal relationship with Him again. Mankind’s sin required this sacrifice. A sacrifice from Jesus so that man could receive salvation and live forever! 🕊️

Symbol of the Death of Jesus Christ

The death of Jesus and his resurrection will remain forever engraved in our memories. He showed us that he loved us by sacrificing himself on the cross. 😌 Some of you have probably already had a visit from the Lord God, confided in him and prayed in his name. Whether Jesus visited you or not, know that he is and will remain in your heart forever. He will protect you throughout your life and guide you towards the light and eternal life. 🙏
