1) Virgin Mary Biography
A. The importance of Mary in religion
The Virgin Mary, is one of the key symbols of Christianity . A woman whose worship changed the world. However, she is perhaps one of the most misunderstood biblical figures. The Virgin Mary is well known in the Bible, but there is not much archaeological evidence about her life. Over the centuries, the story of Mary whose real name was "Miriam" has changed the outlook of men and religion . Her greatest claim to fame was delivering the divine Son. As the Holy Mother in Christianity, she has been described as a symbol of purity and humility . 🤲🏻
In addition to these official titles given to her by Christianity, the Virgin Mary has acquired great cultural significance. Popular devotion to the Virgin in forms such as feasts and the rosary have played an extremely important role in the lives of Roman Catholics and Orthodox. Modern Roman Catholicism has emphasized that the doctrine of Mary is not an isolated belief, but must be seen in the context of two other Christian doctrines: the doctrine of Christ and the doctrine of the Church. What is said of Mary is derived from what is said of the Messiah. She has also been known as the first believer and as the one in whom the humanity of the Church was representatively incarnated.
Just before you continue reading the story of Mary, we would like to share with you some little memories of the Holy Mother of the Savior. By clicking on the image below you can find a sublime religious object in homage to Mary.
B. Definition of the word "Virgin"
The word virgin comes from the Latin " virginem ," meaning " young girl " or sexually inexperienced woman. This word was the basis for stories of Mary as a woman who had never had intercourse with a man. However, historically, the term virgin meant " one in herself ." A woman who did not need a man. This did not necessarily mean that she did not have one. This interpretation better represents a woman who was independent, financially free, mentally strong, and not overly dependent on her lover or partner.
However, scholars also suggest that the word virgin may have been applied by ancient societies to women who were independent in various areas. It is possible that Mary may have been autonomous, but neither the Bible nor other texts delve into this idea.
The greatest misunderstanding in the story of the Virgin Mary comes from an explicit error. It is common for transcriptions to be based on earlier translations and the meaning of words is often decoded by specialists in specific languages. In addition, many translations have been made of this story from dictionaries created by Latin specialists in order to find the key to the mystery behind the word "virgin". Mary could probably have been called a virgin because of her charisma, her strength and her power to support her son.
C. Mother of Jesus
The Virgin Mary is known by many names such as: the Blessed Virgin, Mother Mary, Our Lady, Queen of Angels, Mary of Sorrows, and Queen of the Universe. But also: Saint Mary, Mary of Nazareth or Blessed Virgin Mary. She is known through biblical references which are however too rare to construct a complete biography.
The development of the doctrine of Mary can be traced through the titles that have been given to her in the history of Christian communions: the incarnation, Virgin mother , immaculate, and assumed into heaven. In Western Christian art, Mary is most often represented as a very reverent person.
Mary was born into a devout Jewish family in Galilee, which is now part of Israel when it was part of the ancient Roman Empire. By the time Mary was about 13 years old, historians say she was betrothed to Joseph, a devout Jewish man. It was during her betrothal that she learned through an angelic visitation of the Lord's plans for her to serve the Son of God in heaven as a Mother on Earth . Mary responded with faithful obedience to God's plan, despite the personal challenges it would present to her.
D. Joachim and Anne: Parents of Marie
Mary's parents were Saint Joachim and Saint Anne whom Catholic tradition says were visited separately by angels to inform them that Anne was expecting Mary. Mary's parents dedicated her to the Lord in a Jewish temple at the age of three. The Protevangelium of James , which was probably written in its final form in the early 2nd century, describes Mary's father, Joachim, as a wealthy member of one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Joachim was deeply saddened along with his wife Anne by their childlessness. He recalled to Abraham, the earliest Christian writing, that on the last day the Lord gave him a daughter. 👨👩👧
Joachim and Anne began to devote themselves entirely and rigorously to prayer and fasting, wondering at first whether their inability to conceive a child could signify divine displeasure with them.
E. Birth of the Virgin Mary
After Mary's birth , according to the Protevangelium of James, Anna made a shrine in the little girl's room and allowed nothing common or impure because of the child's special holiness. The same scripture relates that when she was one year old, her father made a great feast and invited the priests, scribes, elders and all the people of Israel to celebrate and venerate Mary's birth . St. Augustine described the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary as an event of cosmic, historical importance, and a fitting prelude to the birth of the Messiah. "She is the flower of the field from which the precious lily of the valley blooms," he said.
The circumstances of the Virgin Mary's childhood and youth are not directly recorded in the Bible, but other documents and traditions describing the events of her coming into the world are cited by some of the earliest Christian authors of the first centuries of the Church.
Joachim brought the child to the priests, the story continues, and they blessed her, saying: "God of our fathers, bless this child and give him an everlasting name, that he may be called from generation to generation..." And he brought her to the chief priests, and they blessed her, saying: "O God most high, look upon this child, and bless her with the supreme blessing , which shall be everlasting."
2) Mary of Nazareth: Apparition and Religion
A. Virgin Mary Miracle
People have attributed many miracles to the Lord working through the Virgin Mary. Many Christians have reported many miracles performed by Mary that have happened through her since she went to heaven. There have been many apparitions on earth to deliver messages and encourage all believing Christians to believe in the Lord.
B. Apparition of the Virgin Mary
Among the famous apparitions of the Virgin Mary, we can cite several:
- Our Lady of Lourdes: France
- Our Lady of Fatima: Portugal
- Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mexico
- Our Lady of Knock: Ireland
- Our Lady of Medjugorje: Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Our Lady of Akita: Japan
- Our Lady of Kibeho: Rwanda East Africa
- Our Lady of Zeitoun: Egypt
C. Apparition Mary Sister Catherine
We read in the life of Sister Catherine , an Augustinian nun, that in the place where this servant of the Lord lived, there also lived a woman named Mary. In her youth, she was a fisherwoman who stubbornly persisted in her evil ways until an extremely old age. For this, she was banished by her fellow citizens and forced to live in a cave beyond the limits of the place. She died in a state of disgusting corruption abandoned by all. One day, a soul from purgatory appeared to her , and said to her, Sister Catherine, how unhappy is my fate... You commend to the Lord the souls of all those who die, and you have had no pity for your soul alone?
The Blessed Virgin Mary is said to have asked her to wear the images of the Miraculous Medal as we know it today, telling her to engrave them on several medals. This was so that each person who wore it would receive the graces of Mary. Catherine had her request approved to create the Miraculous Medal which became extremely popular during the cholera epidemic in 1832 and to this day...
Sister Catherine immediately had these masses said in her favor, and this soul after a few days appeared to her again, brighter than the sun and said to her: "I thank you, Sister Catherine. I am now going to Heaven to sing divine mercy and pray for you." A joy and a sadness at the same time to see Mary leave for heaven. 😌
More than just jewelry, each Miraculous Medal bearing the divine image of Our Lady of Lourdes is a religious object of great value to every Christian believing in the Mother of the Savior. You can keep it around your neck with a necklace or with a bracelet suspending the sacred medal. We are delighted to be able to share with you our Miraculous Medals all having been engraved with the Miraculous Virgin Mary .

E. Marie Religion: Christian Belief
CATHOLIC MARY
Catholics say that Mary remained a virgin her entire life. Catholic tradition teaches that she was without sin and that she was a virgin forever . Catholics also believe in the miracle of the Assumption, which means that Mary did not die a natural human death. She was assumed body and soul from Earth into Heaven while she was still alive. Catholics believe that Protestants ignore Mary. They base their beliefs on the Bible and the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church.
The belief among Catholics is that she became pregnant by miracle. In this way, she is believed to be sinless, making her a suitable mother for the divine Son.
ORTHODOX MARY
Orthodox Christians believe in the miracle of the Dormition. Which means that Mary died naturally and her soul went to heaven. While her body remained on earth for three days before being resurrected and raised to heaven. Catholic and Orthodox Christians believe that Mary was miraculously taken to heaven in an unusual way. Both Orthodox Christians and Catholics honor Mary's virginity.
MARY PROTESTANT
According to Protestants , only the Son of God was sinless. Protestants also believe that Mary had other children with her husband Joseph biologically before the Messiah was born. But Catholics believe, on the contrary, that they were cousins or stepchildren of Mary from Joseph's previous marriage to a woman who had died. When it comes to Mary, Protestants believe that Catholics are making too much of her. Protestants base their beliefs of the Messiah, Mary, and everything about religion solely on the Bible. Protestant Christians believe that she was not sinless.
MUSLIM MARY
Muslims believe that Mary was miraculously a perfect person from the moment of her conception. Islam says that the Creator gave Mary a special grace when he created her so that she could live a perfect life. All Muslims believe in the miracle of the Lord's coming into the world , in which Mary conceived as a virgin, by the power of the Holy Spirit.
F. Marie new ark of the covenant
The Virgin Mary has become a symbol for many things including the famous Ark of the Covenant . The Old Testament Ark of the Covenant contained three elements: The Word of God in the form of tablets of stone (the 10 Commandments), the manna (bread) from Heaven, and Aaron's rod that grew and came to life (Hebrews 9:4). Just like that, the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary contained Christ.
The living Word of God (John 1:1), the bread of life (John 6:48), and the ruler with a rod of iron who also came to life (Rev. 12:5). At Mary's Annunciation, Gabriel told her that the power of the Most High would overshadow her (Luke 1:35). The Ark was made of pure gold and was a very holy symbol. This parallels the Catholic teaching of Mary being also pure and holy . These suggestions support the idea that Mary was portrayed as a symbolic sacred vessel that brought the Savior to life. The Ark of the Covenant was so holy (like this little statue of the Ark) that no ordinary person could touch it. Uzziah held it out to steady it, and was instantly struck and died (2 Samuel 6:7)." 😮
3) Mother of God
A. Angel Gabriel: the Good News
The Christmas story begins with a teenage girl named Mary, who is told, in a special way, that she is going to give birth to a very special baby . In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a city in Galilee, to the virgin who had promised to marry a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The angel came to her and said, “Greetings, beloved! The Lord is with you.” Mary was very troubled by his words and wondered what kind of greeting this could be. But the angel said to her, “ Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and bear a son and name him Jeshua. He will be great and will be called the Son of God. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end. ”
I am the servant of the Lord, Mary answered. I will do what God has asked of me, just as you have said. Then the angel left. Mary would have been very surprised if the angel Gabriel said that the Holy Spirit would be in her, because in the old Jewish stories, only very important people could have taken his place. She might not have even believed that this was going to happen to her. So she went to her cousin Elizabeth to see if it was really true. She did this before she even told Joseph about Gabriel's coming and the Savior's coming into the world .
You would be delighted to learn more about the coming into the world of our Lord. Written with passion and love for our God, The Origin of Christmas will tell you the whole story of the coming of our Savior! 👼
B. Mary and Joseph
Joseph, the earthly father of the Lord, created a family with Mary and their little son Jeshua (Jesus). Joseph and Mary were a very ordinary couple in Israel at that time. They would probably have been very poor. Joseph was a carpenter and this work was considered by some religious leaders to be a duty of religion rather than a profession. Joseph and Mary were both descendants of King David of Israel. But at that time his family was in a state of unprecedented poverty. Mary was also related to the traditional priestly families of Israel through her cousin Elizabeth.
Mary was probably between 14 and 16 years old when she gave birth to the Messiah. This was a very common age for young women to become engaged and married at that time. So the son of God was the son of a teenage mother. Joseph was probably a little older, about 30 years old. Under Jewish law, an engagement like that of Joseph and Mary was treated almost like a marriage and could only be broken by a formal divorce.
C. The Son of God
The boy was famous for performing all sorts of miracles that he had learned from the ancient masters. Some of his talents were walking on water, turning water into wine, and many more. The name (or Jeshua as it would have been called at the time) was a very common name in Israel. The name means " Savior " and has a very important meaning in the history of Christianity.
The Savior was not born of the union of a man and a woman, but of the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit replacing the seed of a man. And what can this mean but that the human nature of Mary and the divine nature of the Holy Spirit united in the person of the Messiah? Mary brought her humanity. The Holy Spirit brought divinity. And the Savior, the man of God born, with a divine nature and a human nature in one person.
D. The Holy Virgin Mary
Over the centuries, some priests and bishops have questioned whether Christians should worship Mary. Perhaps they were aware of the error that appeared in the translations of the early texts, but they felt that there was nothing they could do to correct this error.
However, this does not change Mary's position in history. Some argue that the stories of the Bible cannot be read as true historical accounts, but as symbolic legends. This idea creates even more debates between religious people and some scholars. Nevertheless, as time passes and new discussions reveal more about her, the story of Mary becomes even more fascinating . 🕊️
E. Mary Patron Saint
Mary is considered the patron saint of all humanity , as well as groups such as mothers, blood donors, travelers, and those who work in the travel industry (such as airline and ship crews). Cooks, those who work in the food industry, construction workers, those who make clothing, jewelry, furniture in many places and churches around the world. And finally those who seek spiritual enlightenment.
Since the apparitions of Mary and the importance she has for many Christians, one of the most common ways for religious people to feel the presence of Mary in their lives is to decorate a room in their home with a religious statue of the Virgin Mary . Whether it is to keep a statue of Our Lady of Fatima or Our Lady of Lourdes, each of the statues in the image of Mary is a sacred object to be used wisely. You will find them in various physical stores next to the places of worship where Mary appeared, but also in online stores offering lots of statues of Mary. Here, you can see some of quality and delivered for free.
F. Pregnant Virgin Mary: Creator of the Savior
The first widespread theological controversy about Mary concerned the appropriateness of applying to Mary the title Theotokos , meaning " God-bearer " or " mother of God ." The title seems to have arisen in devotional usage, probably in Alexandria in the 3rd or 4th century. It was a logical deduction from the doctrine of the full divinity of Christ that was established as dogma in the 4th century. Those who defended this dogma were also those who drew the conclusions from it.
Perhaps, as the 19th century English theologian Cardinal John Henry Newman supposed. He was pointing to the determination of the Council of Nicaea in 325 that Christ was not only the highest of creatures, but belonged to the divine side of the line between Creator and creature. Which was even responsible for the rapid growth of devotion and speculation related to Mary as a being being the highest of creatures .
By the end of the 4th century, the Theotokos had successfully established itself in various sections of the Church, because it seemed that the proponents of the title were blurring the distinction between the divine and the human in Christ. Nestorius, the Patriarch of Constantinople, opposed its use, preferring the less explicit title Christotokos, which means " Christ-bearer " or " mother of Christ ." Along with other aspects of his teaching, Nestorius' objections were condemned at the Council of Ephesus in 431.
4) Mary in the Bible
A. Mary in the Gospel
Mary appears in the Gospels in the following incidents 📖:
- the annunciation
- the visit with Elisabeth
- his relative and the mother of Jean-Baptiste
- the precursor of Jesus (Luke 1:39 ff.)
- the birth of the Savior and his presentation in the Temple (Luke 2:1 ff.)
- the coming of the Magi and the flight into Egypt (Mt 2, 1s)
- the Passover visit to Jerusalem when Jesus was 12 years old (Luke 2:41 ff.)
- the wedding at Cana in Galilee
- although his name is not used (John 2:1 ff.)
- the attempt to see Jesus during his teaching (Mark 3:31 ff.)
- the station on the cross where, apparently a widow, she was entrusted to the disciple John (John 19:26 ss.).
B. The Old Testament
Mary was mentioned very little in the Old Testament and we did not have a great deal of information about her. The Old Testament passages presented in support of her by the Church Fathers such as Ezekiel 44:2 and Solomon 4:12 were probably only convincing to those who had already accepted the doctrine.
C. The New Testament
Various propositions can be deduced from the New Testament 's affirmation of Mary's virginity. In the conception of Jesus, including the doctrine that she remained a virgin during his birth and until the end of his life. By far the most voluminous accounts of Mary in the New Testament are the infancy accounts in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew . In their present form, both accounts make a point of asserting that the Messiah was conceived in Mary's womb without any human agency (Matthew 1:18; Luke 1:34).
The passages written by Luke and Matthew seem to be the only references to this subject in the New Testament. The apostle Paul does not mention it anywhere. The Gospel of Mark begins with Christ as an adult. The Gospel of John begins with his prehistoric existence. Matthew attaches no theological significance to the miracle, but it is possible that the angel's words in Luke 1:35 are intended to connect the child's holiness with the mother's virginity. Numerous textual variations of Matthew 1:16, including some with the words "Joseph begat Jesus," have led some scholars to wonder whether such a statement was part of Matthew's original story.
In post-biblical Christian literature, the most voluminous discussions about Mary have focused on her virginity. Based on the New Testament, it is the unanimous teaching of all the Orthodox Fathers of the Church that Mary conceived the Messiah with her virginity intact. A teaching enshrined in early Christian creeds and endorsed by the Reformers of the 16th century as well as by most Protestant churches and believers since the Reformation. One of the most controversial theories concerning Mary is that of the "Immaculate Conception." According to the New Testament, conception does not refer to her sexual condition when she gave birth to the Messiah.
D. The Apostles' Creed
The Apostles' Creed seems to have a lesson on virginity in part when it says " born of the Virgin Mary ." Although this teaching about how Mary gave life to Jesus first occurs in the apocryphal or non-canonical Protevangelium of James in the 2nd century, its origins and evolution are not easy to trace. Some scholars have even argued that the primary connotation of the phrase "born of the Virgin Mary" in the Apostles' Creed was this same insistence of the Church on the authentic virility of Jesus . This insistence has been the irreducible minimum in all theories about Mary that have appeared in Christian history.
E. The Quran
The Quran or the Holy Book of Islam honors the Virgin Mary in more ways than the Bible. She is honored as the only woman in the book that has an entire chapter about her. The chapter "Maryam" refers to the Virgin Mary where she stands out. What is even more interesting is that Mary is mentioned more often in the Quran than in the New Testament.
F. Mary and Jesus
The Bible records many moments of Mary being with the Messiah throughout his life. One of the most significant moments was when she and Joseph lost track of the Lord and found him teaching in a temple when he was 12 years old (Luke chapter 2). She walked from Nazareth to Capernaum carrying her children with her to visit her son. We also know that Mary was at the crucifixion of the Savior in Jerusalem . She was near the cross as Jesus died there for the sins of the world (John chapter 19).
Before dying on the cross, Jesus Christ asked the apostle John to care for Mary for the rest of her life. Many historians believe that Mary later settled in the ancient city of Ephesus (now part of Turkey) with John, and ended her earthly life there.
G. The Birth of Jesus: Born of a Human Woman
The earliest allusion to Mary in Christian literature is probably the phrase " born of a woman " in Galatians 4:4, which was written before any of the gospels. As parallels such as Job 14:1 and Matthew 11:11 suggest, the phrase is a Hebrew way of speaking of a person's essential humanity. Applied to Jesus, "born of a woman" was therefore intended to affirm that he was a real man. In contrast to the attempt seen a few years later in various systems of Gnosticism, a dualistic religion of the 2nd century to deny that he had had a fully human life .
For the ancient world, only one human parent was needed to ensure that a person was truly human, and from the beginning it was the human mother of Jesus Christ who provided that assurance.
This insistence has been the irreducible minimum in all the theories about the Virgin Mary that have appeared in Christian history. Her role as mother prevails over all the other roles assigned to her in devotion and in dogma. Those who deny the coming into the world as a virgin generally claim to do so in the interest of true humanity, seeing a contradiction between the idea of Jesus as the human son of a human mother and the idea that he had no human father.
5) Historical Facts about Mary
A. Death of the Virgin Mary
There is no word in the Bible about Mary’s death . That being said, everything we know or don’t know about her death comes from apocryphal accounts. There are many stories that flourish, but many stick to the same story describing: her final days, her funeral, her burial, and her resurrection. In almost all of the stories, Mary was resurrected by Jesus and welcomed into heaven . 🧚 One of the most popular versions describing Mary’s death is the first story by Bishop John of Thessalonica. In the story, an angel tells Mary that she will die in three days. She then calls all the people attached to her to stay two nights in her house. They sing instead of weeping. Three days after the funeral, as with Jesus Christ, the apostles open her sarcophagus and discover that she has been taken by the Lord.
No account of the place and circumstances of the Virgin Mary 's death has been universally accepted in the Church, although paintings depicting her falling asleep in the ancient Ionian city of Ephesus were quite common. No burial place has been recognized, although there is a tomb in Jerusalem said to be hers. And no miracles have been attributed to the relics of her body.
These arguments of silence, however, are not sufficient to establish a dogma and, on the positive side, even the first doctrinal and liturgical testimonies in support of this idea appeared relatively late in history. Finally, in 1950, Pope Pius XII made the dogma official by declaring that the Immaculate Mother of God , the eternal Virgin Mary, during her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to the glory of heaven .
B. Marie New Eve
One interpretation of the person and work of Jesus Christ in the New Testament is the formulation of parallels between him and Adam: "As in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive" (1 Corinthians 15:22). The contrast between Adam's disobedience by which sin came into the world and Christ's obedience by which salvation from sin was accomplished (Romans 5:12-19) is decisive in this parallel. Whether or not the story of the Annunciation in the first chapter of Luke's Gospel was intended to suggest a similar parallel between Eve and Mary , it quickly became a theme of Christian reflection. Writing toward the end of the second century, the Church Father Irenaeus drew the parallel between Eve, a virgin who had disobeyed God's word, and Mary, also a virgin who had obeyed him. 🍎🐍
In any case, the parallel attributed to Mary and her obedience comes from an active part in the redemption of the human race: all were dead in Adam, but Eve had participated in the sin that caused it. All were saved in Christ, but Mary had participated in the life that made this possible.
C. Immaculate Conception: Original Sin
When the Immaculate Conception (preserved from original sin) was promulgated, petitions began to come to the Vatican seeking a definition of the Assumption of the Virgin into heaven. Over the next century, more than eight million people signed such petitions. However, Rome hesitated, because the doctrine was difficult to define on the basis of Scripture and the early witnesses of Christian tradition.
It is the distinction between original sin (the sin with which all men are born) and actual sin (the sin that men commit during their lives), which is firmly established in Western theology by the same Augustine. He himself forced a further clarification of what Mary's sinlessness means.
Some Eastern theologians of the 4th and 5th centuries were willing to attribute actual sins to her, but most Eastern and Western theologians came to accept the idea that Mary had never committed any sins . An idea that found expression even among the reformers of the 16th century. But was she also free from original sin? And if so, how?
Thomas Aquinas, the most important medieval theologian in the West, took a representative position when he taught that her conception was tarnished (extinguished). Like that of all humans, but that God removed original sin in her , apparently before she came into the world. From the first moment of her conception, she was preserved immaculate from all stain of original sin. By the singular grace and privilege bestowed upon her by Almighty God and by the merits of the coming into the world of Christ Jesus, the Savior of mankind.
D. Veil of the Virgin Mary (Hijab)
A mixture of trust, respect and dignity is perceived with the Virgin Mary wearing a veil on her face . Indeed, like many Muslim women of the past and in our modern era, a woman wearing a veil has several characteristics such as: having more confidence in herself, a symbol of respect towards others and a form of personal dignity. It seems that many women have been inspired by the Virgin Mary by wearing a veil, especially Muslim women.
Another significant point would be that wearing a veil on the face would cause the person to increase his love towards God whether it is for Mary or a Muslim woman. A Bible verse from Timothy 2:9 "I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and decorum, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God."
In order to learn more about the use of a veil and what significance it has with regard to Mary and Muslim women who were probably inspired by the Mother of Jesus, we invite you to read a few passages that will teach you the concepts stated at the beginning of the paragraph "veil of the Virgin Mary" (dignity, trust, etc.) right here: 7 definitions of the Hijab . 🧕
Prayer for Mary 🙏🏻

Therefore I pray you, O Mary, by all your love for your Jesus, to preserve and increase more and more in me this most sweet trust in your intercession. By which I certainly hope to find again the divine friendship that I have until now so foolishly despised and lost. Once I have found it again, I wish finally to go one day in your direction, to thank you for this in paradise and there to sing the graces of God and of you forever.
So be it, Amen.
